Former Winnipeg city councillor Shawn Nason is running for the Progressive Conservatives in the upcoming Transcona byelection.

Former Winnipeg city councillor Shawn Nason will be running for the Progressive Conservatives in the upcoming Transcona byelection.

Premier Wab Kinew announced the byelection will be held on March 18 to replace former MLA Nello Altomare, who passed away on Jan. 14.

Nason represented Transcona at city hall from 2018 to 2022, losing in the last election to Russ Wyatt.

The PCs said before being a councillor, Nason worked as a special legislative assistant to Scott Fielding and Eileen Clarke and was a constituency manager for former MP Lawrence Toet.

“My years of community involvement have given me a deep understanding of Transcona’s unique needs. What’s inspired me most is seeing how everyone’s contribution, big or small, has made a meaningful impact to strengthen the community we call home,” Nason said in a news release.

Previously, the NDP named educator Shannon Corbett as the party’s candidate.

Advanced voting will start on March 8.
