Brandon high school evacuated following ‘unverified threat’: police

A high school in Brandon was evacuated on Friday due to a threatening email, according to the Brandon Police Service.

In a social media post, the Brandon Police Service said officers responded to Vincent Massey High School over an “unverified threat” in an email. Police said no immediate risk was identified but added that the school was closed for the afternoon.

The Brandon School Division confirmed the incident to CTV News, adding that the school was temporarily placed in a “hold and secure” at approximately 11 a.m. over a threat against the school.

“As a precaution, the school was closed for the remainder of the day, and parents were asked to pick up their children,” reads the statement from the school division.

Police later said all students were safely evacuated from the high school and that the matter remains under investigation. A spokesperson for the Brandon Police Service said the Major Crimes Unit is involved.

“Vincent Massey High School will reopen as normal this afternoon for all practices, games, and any activities this weekend, and classes will resume on Monday,” said the school division.

“We recognize the disruption this situation has caused, and want to thank our students, staff and families for their patience and cooperation today.”
