Man detained after 10-hour standoff near Winnipeg bridge

A man was arrested by police following a 10-hour standoff Saturday near the Disraeli Bridge.

A man has been detained in custody by the Winnipeg Police Service after a “tense” 10-hour standoff with police Saturday, according to a media release.

Just after 5 a.m. on Saturday, police responded to a report of shots fired at a residence in the 100 block of Grove Street. Police say a man who had a previous dispute with the occupants had returned with a gun, firing at the house.

The man then ran under the Disraeli Bridge near Sutherland Avenue. He was discovered by police responding to the call. The man refused to put down the gun, per the media release.

The situation caused police to cordon off an area near the Disraeli Bridge and Sutherland Avenue. Access to the area by vehicles, pedestrians and watercraft on the Red River was also prohibited.

The WPS crisis negation unit and tactical support team worked together for approximately 10 hours to create a safety plan and communicate with the man, who was described as “distressed.”

Police were able to safely pass the man water as they attempted to de-escalate the situation, according to the media release.

At 3:23 p.m. on Saturday, members of the tactical support team safely took the man into custody where he was turned over to the major crimes unit.

A 36-year-old man who was unlawfully at large and violating his parole was charged with several firearm-related offences, according to police.

Police say that nobody was injured during the situation.
