Road closure begins for storm sewer project in LaSalle

A new phase of the Front Road storm sewer reconstruction project is set to begin Monday, bringing a temporary road closure in LaSalle.

Laurier Drive will be closed at Front Road for about two and a half weeks to allow for storm sewer installation.

Front Road will remain open in both directions, but drivers will not be able to access Laurier Drive from Front Road during the work, Mayor Crystal Meloche said.

Reaume Road is reopening, and motorists are encouraged to use Reaume, Michigan Avenue or International Avenue as alternate routes to access Front Road.

Meloche acknowledged the construction may cause frustration but said the work is necessary to address flooding concerns.

“It’s something that’s required — flood mitigation work,” she said. “It’s something that people have needed and asked for.”

Access to the waterfront, boat ramp and nearby businesses will remain open throughout construction, she added.

The project is part of the town’s $7.9-million Front Road storm sewer reconstruction, aimed at reducing flood risks, with partial funding from the federal Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.
