‘It shakes you up’: 2.9 magnitude earthquake felt in and around Amherstburg, Ont.

People in Amherstburg, Ont., say a sudden bang — followed by a noticeable rumble — is how they experienced a small earthquake that was felt Sunday morning across parts of Essex County.

Earthquakes Canada reports the 10:32 a.m. quake measured 3.0 magnitude, hitting about 11 kilometres southeast of Amherstburg and 31 kilometres south of Windsor.

Beaudette said she was in bed scrolling on her phone when she heard a loud bang — followed by a rumble that she says lasted about 30 seconds.

“It shook the whole bed. I swear I could feel the movement of the wall,” said Beaudette.

“I jumped out of bed and yelled downstairs to my kids — even the dog woke up and ran over. You heard the bang, and then you could feel a wave coming through. It was pretty intense.”

Beaudette posted about what she heard and felt in an Amherstburg community group at 10:33 a.m.

“Two minutes later, there were 57 comments,” she said.

“Everybody felt it.”

The post quickly became a community check-in, with people from Amherstburg, Harrow, McGregor, LaSalle, Colchester and Kingsville reporting similar experiences — a loud boom, rumbling and shaking.

Some said they initially thought it was thunder, a truck, construction or quarry blasting.

Jim Jarrett said he was sitting at home when he felt what he first thought was thunder.

“But there were no clouds or nothing around,” he said.

“That’s when I figured it must have been an earthquake.”

His wife, Rita Jarrett, said she was making breakfast when she felt the floor shake.

“I thought it was just a big truck going by,” she said.

“It shakes you up.”

Laura Piper said she didn’t suspect an earthquake at first either.

“It felt like thunder, just a minor shake,” she said.

“I never thought it would have been an earthquake. It was actually pretty cool.”

For Michelle Robinson, it was her first time feeling a quake.

“I heard a boom, and I felt it shake,” she said.

“I went outside and said, ‘Did you feel that? What was that?’ That’s when my husband told me it was an earthquake. He just knew.”

Despite the relatively low magnitude, the shallow depth likely made the quake more noticeable across the region.

Sunday’s earthquake did not result in any reported damage, according to Earthquakes Canada.

Both Earthquakes Canada and the United States Geological Survey are encouraging anyone who felt the shaking to submit a report through its website.
