This random fact is from the Canadian Weather Trivia Calender by Environment Canada’s David Phillips.

1921: A cloudburst, described as a once-in-a-lifetime storm, took out 4 bridges near Bradford, ON. The flood carried away fence stumps, including groundhogs riding on top of the posts. A local farmer, coming across the washout, took off his red winter underwear, waded into water up to his neck, and used the red flannels to flag down the Orillia train, therby avoiding another disaster.

Sigh, I love farmers… :)
