Most of the island woke up to an unsettled morning of rain, clouds and occasional sunny breaks, but look what happened at Mount Washington! This picture taken from the alpine resort’s webcam at 6:45am shows a dusting of snow at the top of the mountain. Snow?! This early in September?! I know, I know. Here’s what happened. A cold upper trough brought the freezing levels down overnight. At the weather station located at the Sunrise chair (elevation 1589m), the temperature dipped to -0.1°C just before dawn.
Precipitation + cold temperatures = snow. Ok, it’s not actually that simple, but at the risk of losing you over a lesson in atmospheric physics, we’ll go with it. It may feel like fall is here early and winter is just around the corner, but by the weekend we’ll be back to summer.
