Victoria police say an officer had to be hospitalized for his injuries after he was attacked while interrupting a break-and-enter early Sunday.

The officer was responding to a 911 call from an Esquimalt resident who found a man on the back porch of her Lyall Street home, trying to break in.

The man was at the back door when the officer arrived. Police say when the officer approached the man, he attacked and a fight ensued.

The officer was assaulted and then assaulted with an unidentified weapon, suffering non-life threatening injuries, but was still able to restrain the man.

Backup arrived a short while later and the man was taken into custody, while the police officer was taken to hospital for treatment.

The Esquimalt man arrested received tele-bail and will face charges of assaulting an officer and assaulting an officer with a weapon, according to police
