Victoria Police took a man into custody following an armed standoff on Gorge Road Sunday night.

Officers were called to a residence in the 200-block of Gorge Road East just before 9 p.m. for reports of a man with a gun threatening to harm others in the building.

When police arrived, the man barricaded himself in a unit and other residents evacuated the building.

An emergency response team and negotiators were called to the scene as police cordoned off the area to traffic out of safety concerns.

The man eventually surrendered to police at around 1:30 a.m. and was taken into custody without incident, according to police.

No one was injured and a firearm was seized at the scene.

Police say 62-year-old Victoria resident Mark Cunningham has been charged with three offences, including uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

He made his first court appearance Monday.
