7 impaired drivers stopped in Sidney, B.C., over May long weekend

RCMP say impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes in Canada.

Seven drivers were taken off roads in Sidney and North Saanich, B.C., over the May long weekend for alleged alcohol- or drug-impaired driving, according to the RCMP.

Police say officers conducted increased traffic enforcement across the Saanich peninsula during the holiday weekend, one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

In a news release issued Monday, Sidney/North Saanich RCMP said seven drivers received immediate roadside suspensions. Several vehicles were also impounded.

The detachment said officers also arrested one person for possession of a controlled substance after allegedly seizing methamphetamine during a traffic stop. Charges have not yet been laid.

Police did not say where the stops occurred or whether any crashes or injuries were connected to the investigations.

The enforcement comes as police agencies across British Columbia continue to warn about the dangers of impaired driving heading into the summer months.

“Choosing to drive while impaired puts everyone in the community at risk,” the detachment said in the release.

The May long weekend is traditionally associated with increased roadside checks and enforcement campaigns as warmer weather brings more drivers onto highways and local roads.
