Tobin Peter Haas, 57, was reportedly pulled over by an RCMP traffic enforcement officer in Delta, B.C., around 10:30 a.m. Saturday because Haas was already wanted on a province-wide warrant for his arrest. After the brief roadside stop, Haas reportedly fled the scene, striking the officer with his vehicle (RCMP)

A 57-year-old man is facing multiple charges, including assaulting a police officer with a weapon and dangerous driving causing bodily harm, after a Mountie was injured in a hit-and-run crash near Vancouver.

The suspect was driving a Nissan Versa when he was stopped a B.C. Highway Patrol officer in Delta just after 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 17, 2024, according to police.

The man was already wanted on a provincewide warrant for breaking and entering when he allegedly fled the traffic stop on Highway 91 near 72nd Avenue, the RCMP said in a statement following the incident.

The suspect vehicle struck the attending officer, sending him to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police later recovered the vehicle but the suspect was not located, prompting investigators to issue a public warning not to approach the suspect who remained at large.

“The police officer involved is still recovering from his injuries,” the B.C. Highway Patrol said in a statement Monday.

Tobin Peter Haas of Vancouver is charged with one count each of assaulting a police officer with a weapon, dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, resisting or obstructing a police officer and driving with a suspended licence.

Court records show Haas has prior convictions for fleeing from police, possession of stolen property and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

His next scheduled court appearance is April 1 in Surrey provincial court.
