‘There’s a man underneath your car’: Chilling 911 call in deadly B.C. hit-and-run

CTV News has obtained the chilling 911 call that reveals the desperate attempt of a witness to stop the driver in a fatal hit-and-run.

A clearer picture is emerging of the horrific and deadly sequence of events the night a man was hit and dragged in Surrey, B.C.

CTV News has obtained the 911 call made to BC Ambulance in a crime that saw a man dragged more than one kilometre after being struck by a car.

In the Jan. 27, 2024 call released through court, a witness can be heard trying to get help after spotting something unusual.

“There’s a man lying in the middle of the road,” the witness tells a 911 dispatcher.

But as the witness is providing details, the victim – only being identified in court as J.G. at the family’s request – is suddenly struck by a red Ford Mustang.

“Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God,” says the witness.

When the 911 operator asks what happened, a distraught witness replies: “Someone just hit him; just ran him over.”

The dispatcher directs the witness to check on the victim and whether he is awake and breathing, but the witness cannot find him.

“Oh my God. Where is he?” the witness says in the recording.

The Mustang was driven by Gaganpreet Singh. His passenger, to whom the car belonged, was Jagdeep Singh.

Crown told the court Thursday that both men got out of the car after J.G. was hit.

But even as the witness called out to them, “There’s a man underneath your car,” the car sped away.

The prosecution said the victim was dragged 1.3 kilometres before the car pulled into a cul-de-sac. That’s where Gaganpreet Singh and Jagdeep Singh worked together to dislodge J.G.’s badly mangled body from under the car.

The witness’ wife followed the Mustang in her own vehicle for a distance and was able to provide police with a licence plate number.

The two offenders have pleaded guilty to a number of charges, including failing to stop after an accident and interference with a dead body. They came to Canada from India on international student visas and face a deportation hearing.

The men are scheduled to be sentenced July 16.
