Woman injured in shooting at Surrey home

The motive of a weekend shooting has not been determined but extortion has also not been ruled out.

An unknown suspect fired “multiple rounds” at a Surrey home Sunday night, and one of the bullets struck a woman inside, according to police.

The Surrey Police Service said officers responded to reports of shots fired outside a residence in the 12100 block of 101B Avenue just after 9 p.m.

“SPS officers arrived and (found) one person, an adult woman, inside who had been injured. She was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” the department wrote in a statement Monday.

There were several other people in the home at the time, but they were not injured in the incident, according to police.

The victim remained in hospital Monday morning, but she is expected to make a full recovery, Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton told CTV News.

While on the way to the scene of the shooting, two officers in an SPS SUV with lights and sirens activated collided with another vehicle in the 12500 block of 96 Avenue.

The two officers were taken to hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries” and the people in the other vehicle were unhurt, according to the department. The crash is under investigation.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation and police are determining whether it was connected to other incidents, the SPS said, adding that no links to extortion have been made so far.

Houghton said investigators are working to find out whether or not the house, or anyone inside, were the intended targets.

“There could be many reasons why an individual or residence can be the target of a shots fired. It may have, as we’ve seen in several cases already this year, been related to extortions. Now that link has not been made in this case. It may be related to previous or past residents, or it may be related to an individual’s connection to other types of criminal activity. All that needs to be looked in to at this early stage,” he said.

Police said officers will remain on scene throughout the day to collect evidence and asked anyone who witnessed the shots being fired or has video to call the SPS at 604-599-0502.
