Speed a likely factor in deadly hydro pole crash in Surrey, police say

Published:

The wreckage of a Hyundai Elantra is seen after a fatal crash in Surrey, B.C., on Feb. 10, 2025.

Authorities believe speed was a factor in a single-vehicle crash that left a driver dead in Surrey, B.C., overnight.

Police said the Hyundai Elantra was heading west along 104 Avenue, between 122 and 124a streets, when it left the road and struck a hydro pole around 10:40 p.m. Monday.

The Elantra could be seen with significant damage in the aftermath of the collision.

“The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, died on scene,” said Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton of the Surrey Police Service, in a statement.

A stretch of 104 Avenue was closed overnight as BC Hydro crews repaired the power pole, but has since reopened.

While the cause of the collision remains under investigation, Houghton said “at this early stage, the speed of the vehicle is thought to be the primary contributing factor.”

Authorities asked anyone with information to contact the Surrey Police Service at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 2025-11754.
