Several rain, snow warnings in effect in B.C.

Don’t forget your umbrella—it’s going to be a wet and stormy day for much of Metro Vancouver.

British Columbians in several parts of the province are being warned of inclement weather Sunday.

As of the afternoon, there were 15 Environment and Climate Change Canada weather alerts in effect for B.C.

Between 50 and 70 millimetres of rain are expected to fall in parts of Metro Vancouver by Monday evening, where a rainfall warning covers the North Shore, the Tri-Cities, Ridge Meadows and Howe Sound. A rain advisory is also in place for the Sea to Sky Highway.

“Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas. Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced at times,” the alert reads.

To the north, the agency says the Central Coast will receive up to 100 millimetres of rain by Monday night, and asked residents to watch out for washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

The precipitation will begin Sunday evening and will be the most intense overnight and on Monday, with the heavy rain giving way to showers by the evening, ECCC says.

Slightly inland, the Kitimat area is expected to get at least 50 millimetres of rain in the same period and Bella Coola will receive 75 millimetres by Tuesday morning, according to the rain warnings.

Moving up, a snowfall warning is in place for inland sections of the North Coast including Stewart, where it is predicted 15 centimetres of snow will accumulate Sunday, followed by another 20 centimetres on Monday.

“Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will likely be reduced at times. Local utility outages are possible. Property or tree damage is possible,” the alert reads.

And even further north from there, a blowing snow advisory has been issued for Haines Road in B.C’s northwest between Alaska and Yukon, lasting until Monday evening. ECCC warned drivers of poor visibility due to the high wind and asked people to consider postponing non-essential travel.

Heading east, B.C.’s Peace River District including Fort St. John and Dawson Creek, as well as parts of the Fort Nelson region, are expected to get 10 to 15 centimetres of snow by Monday night.

Snowfall amounts will be slightly higher in the Williston region, up to 20 centimetres, according to ECCC.

A winter storm warning is also in effect for the Pine Pass area of Highway 97, where the agency says heavy snow will lead to hazardous driving conditions.

Hazardous winter conditions are also possible in B.C.’s southern Interior on Highway 3 between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass, where forecasters are watching the potential for heavy snow followed by rain and wind Monday.
