RCMP arrest 15, recover steaks and cosmetics in Richmond retail theft crackdown

More than a dozen people were arrested and nearly $3,500 worth of merchandise—including steaks and cosmetics—was recovered during a one-day retail theft blitz in Richmond last month.

The enforcement operation on April 20 was part of Richmond RCMP’s ongoing “Boost and Bust” initiative targeting property crime in the city’s downtown core.

“The operation brought together frontline officers working in plainclothes and loss prevention officers from multiple retail partners across Richmond’s commercial districts,” Mounties said in a news release Wednesday. “The coordinated approach allowed LPOs to relay real-time information to a dedicated police surveillance and enforcement team, enabling timely and targeted arrests.”

RCMP said 15 people—including three youths—were arrested during the blitz. The suspects included eight males and seven females.

Seven of the suspects are Richmond residents, three are from Vancouver, two are from Langford and the others are from Delta, Kelowna and Nanaimo.

Mounties said charges of theft under $5,000 are being recommended against 10 people and that eight of those arrested had previous interactions with police.

One of the suspects was also arrested on an outstanding warrant and was held in custody, RCMP said.

All of the suspects arrested were offered referrals to social services.

Food, clothing and beauty products were among the goods most commonly stolen during the blitz, according to police.

RCMP said the recovered items had an estimated value of approximately $3,453.55.

“These targeted operations demonstrate the value of intelligence-led policing and strong partnerships with local retailers,” Insp. Vaz Kassam said in the release. “Retail theft affects businesses, staff and the broader community. By working together, we can disrupt this activity and help maintain a safe environment to everyone who lives, works and shops in Richmond.”

Authorities added that the “Boost and Bust” operation is funded through the province’s Community Safety and Targeted Enforcement Program and that similar enforcement efforts are planned regularly throughout the year.
