Police in New Westminster are probing a Thursday night fire at a tennis club in the city that has been deemed suspicious.

The fire started around 10:15 p.m. at the New Westminster Tennis Club in the 300 block of Royal Avenue, according to police.

Nobody was inside the building at the time, but it sustained “extensive damage,” the department said.

The New Westminster Police Department’s major crime unit has taken over the case and asked residents and business owners in the area to check their surveillance and dash camera video and call 604-529-2430 or email mcucrimetips@nwpolice.org.

“We are committed to finding out how it happened,” NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Andrew Leaver said in a Friday statement. “We’re asking anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward and help us piece together the events of that night. Your co-operation could be crucial to our investigation.”
