Outcry after B.C. Conservative invites pro-Trump YouTuber into legislature

Published:

While question period began with expressions of unity against U.S. tariffs, the session soon devolved into a shouting match.

A contentious question period in British Columbia’s legislature devolved into shouting as the government house leader denounced a guest of an Opposition MLA who called Ontario’s premier a “fat pig” on YouTube.

The New Democrats and B.C. Conservatives traded barbs over the 2025 budget tabled yesterday and the government’s response to American tariffs, and when an opposition member threw a personal attack at the finance minister, another MLA came to her defense with an allegation that stunned the house.

“The leader of the Opposition got up and said some words about standing up for Canada, well, it’s important that we all stand up for Canada,” began Mike Farnworth, going on to gesture to the gallery. “The person introduced by this caucus posted a video that said, ‘the fat pig Doug Ford in Ontario is ready to cut off the power, and Liberals are cheering him on - this is quite literally, by definition, an act of war.’”

CTV News has reviewed the YouTube video and confirmed that Jasper Sunshine, who goes by MisterSunshineBaby, did make those comments, in addition to describing himself as “a fan of Donald Trump” and calling Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a “grifter.”

In another video earlier this week, Sunshine railed against the provincial and federal response to U.S. tariff, singling out Ford, saying ‘dude has got rabies, he’s frickin’ nuts.’”

Who invited Sunshine?

The MLA for Surrey-Panorama, Bryan Tepper, introduced Sunshine to the house as a guest, which is typical of the start of question period.

“I rise today to express how pleased I am that Prince George resident Jasper Sunshine – a popular YouTuber best known as Mr. Sunshine Baby – is with us,” he said. “Please make this Canadian patriot and independent commentator feel most welcome.”

The NDP caucus was quick to follow up the revelation in the legislature with links to social media posts Sunshine has made, including apologizing to Americans for the Canadian government’s response to the trade war.

CTV News has asked the B.C. Conservative party if the caucus was aware of Sunshine’s comments, but they have not yet replied.

Disgust in the house

Farnworth began his comments on Sunshine calmly, but as he was repeatedly interrupted by Opposition MLAs, his voice rose until he shouted his question to the other side of the house.

“Does the leader of the Opposition think it’s appropriate for a member of his caucus to introduce someone like that when tariffs are the biggest issue we face?” he asked.

The New Democrat caucus rose to give him a standing ovation as the Conservative members kept their seats, with words including “unbelievable” and “pathetic” audible off camera.

The fracas occurred moments before the closing bell rang to end question period, with yelling from both sides continuing and repeated cries of “shameful” echoing.

“Question period is over,” admonished Speaker Raj Chauhan. “You can continue this discussion outside in the hall if you want, OK?”
