Man killed in fight in Maple Ridge, homicide investigators say

Homicide investigators were called to Maple Ridge over the weekend after one man died in a “fatal altercation.”

Mounties initially responded to a “fight in progress” at Port Haney Wharf just before 7 p.m. Saturday, according to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

They found a 28-year-old man with life-threatening injuries, and despite the efforts of first responders he died at the scene.

Investigators believe the incident was “targeted and isolated” and the parties involved knew each other. The killing does not appear gang-related, police added.

“Thanks to the quick actions taken by Maple Ridge RCMP officers, the scene was contained quickly which allowed investigators to preserve critical evidence,” IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong said, in a news release Monday.

“A number of witness interviews are underway as investigators piece together the events leading up to the altercation. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family during this very difficult time.”
