Man carjacked at gunpoint in Surrey

Published:

Surrey police are asking for the public's help as they search for suspects after a man was carjacked at gunpoint in the city's Fleetwood neighbourhood.

A driver had his car stolen at gunpoint in Surrey’s Fleetwood area Thursday evening, and police say the suspects are still at large.

Around 5 p.m., a man reported being approached by two men who demanded his car keys at gunpoint, in the 8700 block of 161 Street, police said.

The victim posted about the incident on social media, sharing photos of the blue 2009 Subaru Impreza, at least one of which was taken while the thief was behind the wheel.

CTV News contacted the victim, who asked not to be named, but shared more details about what happened.

He said he had just parked and was getting his bag out of the passenger seat when the two men came up behind him. When he turned around, he saw one of them was holding a gun.

The victim said the suspect pulled a slide on the gun to allow an unfired round to fall to the ground, then threatened to shoot him if he didn’t hand over his keys.

The victim was uninjured, but the suspects got away with his car.

“Police conducted extensive area patrols searching for the vehicle and suspects with negative results,” a news release from the Surrey Police Service issued Friday reads.

Early Friday morning, the stolen car reportedly crashed with a pickup truck on Fraser Highway at the Langley Bypass.

“Witnesses observed the lone male occupant of the stolen vehicle flee from the area on foot immediately after the crash,” the release continues. “Fortunately, the driver of the Toyota was not seriously injured.”

Officers used police dogs to look for the man but he hasn’t been found yet, the department said.

The victim said he was relieved to know that his vehicle had been found, but not happy to hear it had crashed. He said he recently spent about $4,500 on tires and engine repairs for the vehicle, which he has only owned for about a month.

He said he hopes police catch the suspects and that ICBC will make him whole.

Anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to call the SPS at 604-599-0502 or leave an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.
