It was not a trail of breadcrumbs, but a path of fluid left at the scene of an alleged hit-and-run that led police to their suspect, Burnaby Mounties say.

One month ago, on Feb. 10, the Burnaby RCMP says officers responded to a report that a driver fled the scene after hitting two parked vehicles near McKee Street and McGregor Avenue.

The driver left two clues behind—a piece of the vehicle’s fender labelled “Model X” and a trail of fluid leading away from the scene, according to police.

“Investigators followed the fluid trail to an alley and, eventually, right onto a residential property,” reads a statement issued Monday.

The Tesla owner was arrested for failing to remain at the scene of a collision and the vehicle and its dash cam video seized.

“This was a fluid investigation and our officers simply followed the evidence,” quipped Cpl. Mike Kalanj in the statement. “While ‘X’ didn’t necessarily mark the spot, ‘Model X’ definitely assisted our officers in identifying the suspect vehicle.”

Police say the investigation continues.
