German utility to buy one million tonnes of LNG per year from Ksi Lisims project

Energy Minister Tim Hodgson on the ‘major milestone’ of finalizing a LNG deal with Germany, citing it will contribute $15 billion to Canada’s GDP in 30 years.

VANCOUVER — The federal natural resources minister has announced an agreement that will see the Ksi Lisims project in northern British Columbia supply liquefied natural gas to a German utility for up to 20 years.

Tim Hodgson says Securing Energy for Europe, a German-owned energy company, is to buy one million tonnes per year from the floating LNG terminal planned for Pearse Island near the Alaska border, with deliveries expected to begin by the early 2030s.

Ksi Lisims is a partnership between the Nisga’a Nation, Houston-based Western LNG and Rockies LNG, a group of Canadian natural gas producers.

The project has regulatory approval but the partners have yet to make a final investment decision, which would clear the way for construction to begin.

LNG is natural gas that has been chilled into a liquid state, enabling it to be shipped by sea around the world on specialized tankers.

Ksi Lisims and an expansion to LNG Canada in Kitimat, B.C., have been referred to the major projects office, which aims to speed along infrastructure deemed in Canada’s national interest.
