A man convicted of manslaughter, sexual assault and other serious crimes has been re-arrested in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, authorities announced Monday.
Police apprehended Tyler Strathdee, 36, on Sunday night at the halfway house where he’s been living since relocating from Alberta last year.
Strathdee was the subject of a public warning back in December, when the Vancouver Police Department said he is considered a “high risk to commit further physical and sexual violence.”
He is currently serving a sentence of 11 years and two months for multiple offences committed in Alberta, but had been granted statutory release that would have allowed him to spend the remainder of his time in the community, under several conditions.
Strathdee’s conditions included a ban on using alcohol or drugs, communicating with anyone involved in criminal activity or substance “misuse,” and being in the presence of sex workers.
Authorities have not provided any specifics about why Strathdee was arrested over the weekend, except that he the subject of a warrant under Section 135(1) of the Corrections and Conditional Release Act, which deals with offenders who have breached their conditions or are considered likely to do so.
He remained in custody as of Monday morning, police said.
