There is new hope of finding a hiker who has been missing in B.C.’s Sea to Sky region since the weekend—after emergency crews received a 911 call from his cellphone. Stanislav Volo didn’t come home after heading up the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish on Sunday morning. Authorities have said Volo left behind a detailed plan to hike the Mount Habrich Loop, but days of searching have turned up little sign of him. On Wednesday, Volo’s sister posted on social media that he made a “very brief” 911 call the previous night. “There was very little information from the call, but we know he is on the mountain,” Ola Volo wrote. “He is out there. We need to find him.” Squamish Search and Rescue confirmed the call, and said there was an influx of help from across the region on Wednesday. “We had around 40 searchers from a variety of SAR teams right across the Lower Mainland, all the way from Pemberton in the north, way down to Chilliwack in the east,” said search manager Tyler Duncan. Crews have also been helped by several helicopters, including a Talon chopper equipped with North Shore Rescue’s state-of-the art Lifeseeker device. The search area spans approximately 10 square kilometres of rugged alpine terrain, but Duncan said crews are confident he’s there—due to the trip plan he left with his wife, an interaction he apparently had with another hiker, and the ping of his cellphone on Tuesday. “We are still well within a survivability window,” Duncan said. “We are definitely not giving up hope at this point.” Volo is described as a 43-year-old white man, 5’11” tall, with a medium build, blonde hair in a ponytail, blue eyes and glasses. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, black shorts, white socks, black runners, a blue-and-grey backpack, and a Sea to Sky Gondola pass on a lanyard. Authorities have asked anyone who may have spotted Volo or has information on his whereabouts to contact the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100.
