Mounties in Langley, B.C., say a novice driver lost his licence after crashing into a concrete barrier on Highway 1 while impaired by alcohol over the weekend. RCMP say they received a call from a witness who was following a vehicle on the highway near the 265 Street exit around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. “The vehicle in question, a Ford Ranger, was swerving and driving on the shoulder. As the witness was relaying this information to the police dispatcher, the Ford Ranger crashed into a cement divider and came to rest on the shoulder of the highway,” a news release issued Monday reads. The caller captured the crash on dashcam video, which has been shared by Langley RCMP along with dramatic background music. In the video, the truck is seen striking the barrier before spinning across the roadway. The driver, a 23-year-old Kamloops resident, failed a roadside impairment test and was handed a 90-day driving ban, 30-day vehicle impound and $500 fine, according to police. “We are thankful that this driver’s ambitious goal to drive to Kamloops from Burnaby did not end in a fatality,” spokesperson Cpl. Mansoor Sahak said, in the release. “Impaired driving is the leading cause of criminal deaths in Canada, and it is totally preventable. We are thankful for the witness who called police about this impaired driver.” Mounties reminded drivers who suspect another road user may be impaired by drugs or alcohol to call 911.
