Fire breaks out at Vancouver high-rise Several people are wondering when they’ll get to go back home after a fire in a condo Sunday.

A fire at a downtown Vancouver condo Sunday morning was caused by a "candle on a mattress," according to officials.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Service crews were called to the Woodward's building on Cordova Street shortly after 8:30 a.m. and found the fire in an empty unit on the 28th floor.

The sprinkler system was activated and no one was injured, according to Asst. Chief Keith Stewart.

"The fire was contained to the suite of origin," he said Sunday morning. "Right now, we haven't been able to get a hold of the occupant but we know that the occupant was not home."

On Monday, VFRS Capt. Matthew Trudeau confirmed the details and added that the fire was caused by a candle.
