People strolling the West Vancouver seawall Friday afternoon were treated to a rare sight when a pod of dolphins paid a visit.
Imaan Jiwa walks the route multiple times a week to unwind, and tells CTV News she’s encountered seals and otters, but never dolphins.
She sat down on a bench overlooking the ocean near Ambleside Beach around 4:45 p.m. and was just about to get up and leave when the pod zipped by.
“I was so lucky I stayed,” Jiwa says.
There were about 30 dolphins jumping playfully very close to the shore, she says. A crowd of about the same number of humans gathered to watch the animals.
“It was a very magical moment,” she says. “I was very in awe—I’ll never forget that.”
Jiwa took videos of the encounter, posted them to social media and submitted them to CTV News.
There appears to be an uptick in dolphin sightings in the Lower Mainland this week. Also on Friday, a reddit user posted a video of the mammals jumping around near Third Beach.
And a man shooting video of his electric surfboard in Howe Sound Monday captured the moment a bunch of dolphins joined him for the ride.
Jiwa says the display left her feeling grateful to live in a place with so much wildlife, and will be keeping an eye out for more dolphins next time she visits the seawall.
