Charges laid in deadly double-stabbing in Surrey, B.C.

A 21-year-old man is in police custody, charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted murder, following a double-stabbing last year in Surrey, B.C.

Homicide investigators say Gurtaj Singh was arrested on April 15, approximately four months after the knife attack left one woman dead and another in hospital with serious injuries.

Court records show Singh was charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He is scheduled to appear in court next on May 12.

Police were called to the stabbing at a home in the 14700 block of 108A Avenue at around 3 a.m. on Dec. 14, 2024.

Two people were found at the scene suffering life-threatening injuries, the Surrey Police Service said in a news release following the incident.

“Despite life-saving measures, one woman succumbed to her injuries at scene,” police said. “The second victim was transported to hospital and treated for serious injuries.”

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, which took over the case, says its investigation continues and other perpetrators may have been involved.

“While charges have been laid against Mr. Singh, this investigation is not over,” Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT said in a statement Thursday.

“We believe there are additional parties who were involved in this act of violence and we will continue in our pursuit to bring all those responsible to justice for the victims and their families.”

IHIT says the stabbing is believed to have been part of an isolated dispute over a personal matter, posing no ongoing risk to the public.
