Vancouver police are investigating what they say is the city’s first homicide of 2025 after a body was discovered on the beach in CRAB Park Saturday morning.

Officers were called to the park just before 8:30 a.m., the Vancouver Police Department said in a news release.

“The cause of death at this time is unknown and the victim has not yet been identified,” the statement reads.

“No arrests have been made.”

Images from the scene showed police tape and a white tent set up in the park.

The VPD said additional officers would be working in the area throughout the day to collect evidence. Anyone with information should contact the VPD Homicide Unit at 604-717-2500, police added.

Compared to recent history, March 22 is quite late for Vancouver to see its first homicide of a given year.

In 2024, the VPD reported its first homicide investigation in late January. In 2023, the year’s first killing happened on Jan. 3.

2022’s first homicides happened later, but still before March. On Feb. 20 of that year, two women were shot dead inside a vehicle in the city’s West Point Grey neighbourhood.
