A 30-year-old man from Colwood, B.C., is facing a charge of impaired driving causing bodily harm after a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a collision over the weekend, according to police.

The West Shore RCMP says officers were called to the collision between a Mazda 3 sedan and a motorcycle in Langford at around 8:45 p.m. Saturday.

“The motorcycle sustained extensive damage, and the driver of the motorcycle was taken to the hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries,” the detachment said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators determined Mazda 3 was making a left turn from Kettle Lake Drive onto the West Shore Parkway when it struck the eastbound motorcycle.

The Mazda driver was arrested and released from custody ahead of a scheduled court appearance after police detected signs he was impaired by alcohol, according to the statement.

The man’s car was impounded and he was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, along with a violation ticket for not producing a driver’s licence, the statement said.

The West Shore RCMP says a total of five suspected impaired drivers were handed 90-day driving prohibitions between Friday and Sunday night.

“This was not the only collision involving impaired driving in the West Shore this weekend,” police added, but did not specify how many other suspected impaired driving collisions occurred in the region west of Victoria.

“Our officers are committed to enhancing road safety and will continue to target impaired driving,” Cpl. Mike Jacobson said in the statement. “Please plan ahead for a safe and sober ride home.”
