Two men have been charged with attempted murder one week after a shooting at a normally quiet condo complex in South Surrey.
Mitchel Iyama, 24, and Isaiah Avery John, 21, have each been charged with attempted murder using a firearm for the benefit of a criminal organization, the Surrey Police Service said in a statement Tuesday.
Iyama has also been charged with flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred around 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, at the Harvard Gardens complex near the intersection of 151 Street and 33 Avenue.
Officers from the RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit responded to reports of “several shots fired” and found one man suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene.
Some neighbours reported hearing as many as 20 gunshots, telling CTV News at the time that the weapon sounded “automatic.”
Video from the crime scene showed the windshield of a grey SUV under a tarp with many of its windows shattered with what appeared to be bullet holes. More than a dozen cones were laid out on the ground below, marking evidence.
Police said the suspects attempted to flee, but crashed.
A grey Dodge pickup truck could be seen wrapped around a streetlight near 194 Street and 32 Avenue on the day of the shooting.
The RCMP SPOSU Gang Enforcement Team arrested two men with the help of Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Services, the SPS said.
Iyama and John remain in custody and are awaiting scheduled court appearances on March 19 and March 25, respectively, police said.
