An 80-year-old inmate who was sentenced last year has died in federal prison in B.C.

The inmate’s name is withheld in the Correctional Service of Canada’s announcement of the death, which cites a publication ban intended to protect the identity of the inmate’s victim or victims.

The man died April 2, the CSC said in a statement Monday. He was an inmate at the Pacific Institution/Regional Treatment Centre in Abbotsford.

According to the correctional service, the inmate died of “apparent natural causes.” Nonetheless, as with all cases of deaths occurring in CSC custody, police and the B.C. Coroners Service have been notified and the CSC is reviewing the circumstances of the death.

At the time of his death, the inmate was serving a sentence of seven years, one month and 13 days, which began on June 19, 2024.

The CSC did not specify the offences for which the man had been sentenced.

The inmate’s next of kin have been notified, the CSC said.
