3-year-old pedestrian killed in Chilliwack, B.C., crash

Despite the efforts of first responders, a toddler died after being struck by a driver in an intersection , according to police.

A toddler was tragically killed at an intersection in B.C.’s Fraser Valley on Wednesday morning, according to authorities.

Mounties were called to Vedder and Petawawa roads in Chilliwack at about 10 a.m. for a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, the RCMP said.

“Emergency responders arrived on scene and provided immediate medical assistance. The child, age three, sadly succumbed to their injuries,” reads a news release from the Chilliwack detachment.

The driver remained on scene and is co-operating with the investigation, police said, adding they are not releasing further details out of respect for the child’s family.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the child’s family and loved ones during this unimaginable time,” said Insp. Harinder Kheleh, in the release. “This is a heartbreaking incident that affects the entire community.”

Collision analysts were sent to the scene and the intersection has been closed in all directions for their investigation. The shutdown will affect access to the Vedder Bridge and Petewawa Road, police warned.
