Two people are dead after a small plane crashed in Chilliwack, B.C., over the weekend.

Two people died after a small plane crashed in Chilliwack, B.C., on Saturday, authorities have confirmed.

Police were notified about a potential crash near Chilliwack Lake around 3:30 p.m. and a search of the area located a downed Cessna 172, according to the Chilliwack RCMP.

“Sadly, the two persons on board did not survive,” a Monday news release from the detachment said.

The Armed Forces’ Joint Rescue Coordination Centre “co-ordinated resources to extract the deceased persons from the collision site,” the RCMP said.

The JRCC told CTV News it received an “emergency locator transmitter signal” from the plane around 2:15 p.m.

“The aircraft was reported missing after contact was lost through on flight tracking software,” a statement said, adding that the RCMP took lead on the investigation when the crash site was located by one of the JRCC’s aerial resources.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has been called in to investigate, as has the B.C. Coroner’s Service.

No information was provided about the people who died.
