19-year-old dies after crashing into a tree in North Vancouver

A young man died Friday night after crashing into a tree in North Vancouver’s Blueridge neighbourhood, and his passenger was seriously injured.

Emergency personnel were called to the single-vehicle collision near the intersection of Berkley Avenue and Sechelt Drive around 10:30 p.m. The car involved was a white BMW 535, according to police.

Despite the efforts of first responders, the 19-year-old driver, a North Vancouver resident, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The passenger was rushed to hospital in critical condition, according to B.C. Emergency Health Services. Mounties say the individual is expected to survive.

“Sadly, this incident has had a tragic outcome, and our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” Const. Mansoor Sahak of the North Vancouver RCMP said, in a statement. “If you have been impacted by this event and would like to speak with someone, our Victim Services Unit is available at 604-969-7540.”

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service was called in to investigate and the intersection was closed for several hours.

“Our Traffic Services Team is working to determine the cause of the crash,” Sahak said. “Investigators are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the collision and has not yet spoken to police on scene. If you have dashcam video from the area, we ask that you contact our investigators.”
