Two people suffered serious injuries in a crash between an ATV and a pickup truck Saturday night.

A quad was pulling a utility trailer with two logs on it on the Island Highway just south of Merville when a truck drove into the back of the trailer.

Two people were on the quad at the time. They were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Family members say one of the riders fractured their leg and the other lost a toe.

“We get all sorts of things running through your head when you think quad and truck or trailer with logs on it, doesn’t paint a pretty picture, but fortunately it’s a lot better than we thought,” said Courtenay’s Fire Chief Don Bardonnex.

It’s unknown if weather, speed or alcohol were factors in the collision.
