A crash on the Malahat Monday morning caused delays as people made their way home on BC Day.
Officials tell CTV News a truck was travelling southbound when it experienced a critical mechanical failure causing the wheel to fall off and hit a vehicle. The truck crossed into northbound traffic, south of the Shawnigan Lake turnoff, and hit two other vehicles.
Several people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police are crediting construction and slow speeds on the Malahat in preventing the crash from being much worse.
As of 1 p.m., two northbound lanes and one southbound lane were open, but there was heavy congestion.
