Alvin Tedjo will be elected as Mississauga’s new mayor, the CP24-CTV Election Desk is projecting. With nearly 97 per cent of polls reporting, Tedjo appears to have captured more than 39 per cent of the vote. He leads incumbent Carolyn Parrish by more than 21,000 votes. Parrish appears to have captured 27 per cent of the vote while former Mississauga mayor Bonnie Crombie finished third with approximately 22 per cent of the vote. “Mississauga has voted for change,” Tedjo said to raucous applause and cheers from supporters. “Today, the city of Mississauga has made a clear and historic choice to demand a change at city hall. My friends, it is beyond a doubt the honor of a lifetime to stand here as your next mayor of the city of Mississauga. This is a tremendous responsibility that I do not take lightly.” He thanked incumbent Parrish for her service, as well as other contenders Bonnie Crombie and Dipika Damerla, acknowledging that it was a “tough” race. “Over the course of this campaign, we put forward a comprehensive vision of how we would do things differently and deliver real, meaningful changes that would affect people’s lives for the better,” Tedjo said. “Now we will begin the difficult work of making our plan a reality.” The 41-year-old father of three came to Canada when he was four years old. Tedjo has been on council since 2022. In his campaign, he promised to implement a two-year city-wide residential property tax freeze on the city’s portion of the bill. He’s also promised to increase the property tax rebate for seniors and to make city programs more affordable and accessible for families. Crombie was quick to congratulate Tedjo on his win, speaking just moments after CP24 made the call. “I have called Alvin Tedjo, and I have congratulated him on his victory and the honour of becoming our city’s next mayor,” Crombie told supporters. “Alvin, your energy, your enthusiasm, and the joy you bring to politics matter. You’ve inspired people to get involved and to believe that they can help shape the city’s future.” She also thanked her family and supporters and said, “Serving Mississauga has been the honour of my life.” Parrish also quickly conceded to Tedjo and congratulated him. “Not promising all the treats that people are looking for, not alleviating their pressure during a bad period in our economic history was my mistake. We should have simplified our message,” Parrish said. She wished Tedjo good luck. “He’s gonna have a tough job ahead of him, and he can pick up the phone and call me anytime, and I’ll tell him what not to do,” she said. She added “this just wasn’t a normal election” and that another four years was “not in the cards” for her. “We haven’t had a normal two and a half years. These are tough times that we’re living in,” Parrish said. You can take a closer look at all of Mississauga’s results here. This is a breaking news story. More details to come...
