Mississauga shooting suspect holed up inside home taken into custody, police say

Peel police are investigating a shooting in Mississauga that has sent a man to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A suspect in a Friday morning shooting in Mississauga has been taken into custody after an hours-long standoff.

The shooting happened on Beacon Lane, in the vicinity of Creditview Road and Highway 403, at around 10 a.m.

Police said two men, who were neighbours, were reportedly involved in some altercation immediately prior to the shooting.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was located outside, police said. He was airlifted to hospital in critical condition. However, police said his injuries were later determined to be non-life threatening.

Meanwhile, the suspect, who police believed was armed, fled to a residence, where he remained for hours. Police were able to establish communications with the man later in the afternoon and began negotiations for his surrender.

Just after 10 p.m., police said the suspect was arrested, and no other injuries were reported.

It remains unclear whether the shooting took place on the street or in a nearby home.

“This was a targeted incident,” Acting Sgt. Sarah Patten told reporters at the scene earlier in the day.

Patten said it’s believed that both the suspect and the victim live on the same street and are known to each other.

Nearby St. David of Wales Separate School was placed under a hold-and-secure order as a precaution, but students were dismissed as scheduled at the end of the day, with assistance from Peel Regional Police.
