Fire at downtown shelter prompts evacuations, no injuries reported

Emergency crews are investigating after a fire broke out at a downtown shelter near Cabbagetown.

Police say the call came in around 8:27 a.m. in the area of Sherbourne Street and Carlton Street. Officials say that residents were evacuated as firefighters arrived on scene.

Initial reports from Toronto Fire confirmed to CP24 suggest that crews responded to the incident at the Adams House, a shelter at 430 Sherbourne Street, and have since extinguished the blaze.

Toronto Fire crews say there were no injuries, and crews remain on scene to wrap up operations.

As a result, Sherbourne Street is closed between Carlton Street and Wellesley Avenue as emergency services continue to clear the area.

Drivers are being asked to avoid the intersection and consider alternate routes.
