Police have suspended the search for a man accused of trying to hit officers with a stolen vehicle following a four-hour manhunt that saw one female suspect taken into custody.

West Shore RCMP tweeted at around 11:40 a.m. that a police incident was unfolding near Finlayson Arm Road at the Trans-Canada Highway.

Officers investigating a the theft of a vehicle from Sooke tried to pull over a vehicle linked to the case.

Police say the suspect vehicle fled and crashed a short distance away.

It’s believed the male driver attempted to run over officers with the vehicle before crashing.

A woman was arrested without incident at the crash site while the man escaped on foot.

“We know the woman, we got her identity, she is known to us,” said Const. Alex Berube. “So we’re very confident that we’re going to be able to track the other man down.”

Berube said in a later news release that the male suspect has been identified, and though he cannot be named, he is "well known" to police in the Capital Region.

He said the outstanding suspect does not appear to pose a risk to public safety, despite asking nearby residents to lock their doors hours earlier as police conducted the manhunt.

Early reports also suggest an officer opened fire at some point, but there are no known injuries to anyone involved, Berube said.

A stolen gun found in the stolen vehicle was seized by police.

Anyone who sees the outstanding suspect, described as a 5’8 thin, white male in his late 20s to early 30s, is asked to call police and stay away from him.

Police units from multiple regions including K9 teams and an RCMP helicopter actively searched the area before suspending their efforts at around 5:30.

“[Police] said ‘If you go back home, then go in your house, lock your doors, do not open the doors for anyone except the RCMP,’ so that’s what I’m doing,” resident Rebecca King told CTV News.

King said the dramatic manhunt made her “a little bit nervous,” because the area is normally a quiet, tight-knight community.

Finlayson Arm Road was reopened just before 5 p.m. on both ends, but police confirmed they had not yet arrested a second suspect.

Police said while the search was suspended, officers would be maintain a presence in the area into the evening.
