The Saskatoon Police Service hate crimes unit is investigating an incident during an online meeting at University of Saskatchewan (U of S) campus.
Police say the incident occurred during a meeting on Thursday when unknown online participants breached the technical system, displaying “inappropriate images and video while voicing hateful rhetoric over the meeting.”
Police say they’re working with U of S protective services to investigate the incident as “wilful promotion of hatred.”
The University of Saskatchewan says the “racist and deeply inappropriate incident” occurred during the online component of the General Academic Assembly (GAA).
“When any type of hateful, harassing, indecent or discriminatory behaviour is brought forward, we immediately investigate to the extent possible and provide support to those affected. In this and every situation, we work quickly and actively to support and ensure the safety and well-being of our campus community,” USask said in a statement sent to CTV News late Friday afternoon.
The university says it’s working with police to potentially identify the individuals responsible for this incident. It says there is no risk to the university’s IT system at this time.
