Saskatoon jury finds Roderick Sutherland guilty on all counts in Megan Gallagher killing

WATCH: Late Friday afternoon, jurors delivered their verdict finding Sutherland guilty of all counts in the death of Megan Gallagher.

A Saskatoon jury has found Roderick Sutherland guilty in Megan Gallagher’s death.

Sutherland, 47, has been convicted of manslaughter, unlawful confinement and offering indignity to human remains.

Inside the courtroom, the Gallagher family wept as the first guilty verdict was read — holding each other and crying as the remaining two followed.

Gallagher was killed inside Sutherland’s garage, where she was restrained to a chair.

She died after plastic wrap was placed around her face, the trial heard.

The jury spent two days deliberating the unanimous verdict that was delivered Friday afternoon at Saskatoon’s Court of King’s Bench.

“The only closure we could ever get is if Megan was to walk through the door ... that’s never going to happen, that’s been taken from us,” Gallagher’s father, Brian Gallagher, told journalists outside the courthouse.

Sutherland left in handcuffs, as Justice John Morrall revoked his bail.

While the defence opposed Sutherland being taken into custody, the Crown argued the landscape has shifted following the guilty verdict.

Crown Prosecutor Jennifer Schmidt called the details of Sutherland’s crimes “repulsive.”

“He was involved in the confinement of a young Indigenous woman who was tortured and suffocated to death,” Schmidt said, arguing for Sutherland to be taken into custody.

“This is an offence that has shocked the community at the highest level.”

Defence lawyer Blaine Beaven said he’s disappointed in the jury’s verdict.

“As you heard the Crown’s theory of the case, unless there was an unlawful confinement there really was no manslaughter,” Beaven said.

The next step in the case is sentencing scheduled for Dec. 19, when lawyers are set to argue how long Sutherland should spend behind bars.

The Crown hinted it will push for a sentence in double digits.
