‘Holiday season is make-or-break’: Sask. small businesses urge shoppers to support local

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business is hoping shoppers choose local as we head into the Christmas shopping season.

Small businesses across Saskatchewan are encouraging shoppers to “shop local” this holiday season.

Small Business Saturday, held Nov. 29 this year, is an annual initiative that highlights community spirit and the resilience of local entrepreneurs.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) says one third of small businesses nationally rely on holiday sales for a significant portion of their revenue, but 20 per cent are expecting lower sales this year.

“The holiday season is make-or-break for thousands of small businesses across Saskatchewan and the country,” said Brianna Solberg, CFIB director for the Prairies and Northern Canada.

In Saskatchewan, business owners say they face increasing pressures from rising insurance costs and property taxes. CFIB notes that for every dollar spent locally, more money stays in the community compared with big-box retailers.

“Many local businesses are facing rising costs, labour challenges and economic uncertainty. Shopping local is one of the simplest ways we can support the people who support our communities every day,” Solberg said.

The CFIB says every dollar spent locally keeps 66 cents in the community, compared with 11 cents when the same dollar is spent at big-box or online retailers.
