The Saskatchewan Polytechnic Prince Albert campus hosted a career fair on Thursday, bringing together students, employers, and industry experts to explore career opportunities and build connections.
Project management student Jaimin Sarvaiya says the Saskatchewan Polytechnic career fair is a good way to look for jobs in his field of study, as well as jobs that may not be posted on online portals.
“I believe that if we give a physical resume at the time, we can communicate that what we are actually looking for,” Sarvaiya said. “They can also select us with that, I believe. So, yeah, they can see confidence in us.”
He was able to meet face-to-face with potential employers like the Broda Group, a heavy construction company that has a longstanding relationship with the Prince Albert community.
“We have a relationship with Sask. Polytech that goes back, with different folks coming through the program,” said Randy Emmerson, Broda Group manager of corporate development.
“We’re looking for tradespeople. We’re looking for businesspeople, finance people, occasionally.”
Sarvaiya said he was “interested in the Broda Group because they are in the construction field.”
Students had the opportunity to speak with more than 65 employers in fields like tech and policing, learning about career opportunities and what each job entails.
Those involved say the event also serves as an opportunity for students to hone their networking skills.
“It’s a great collaboration between employers and prospective employees they’re recruiting,” said student employment coordinator Debra Stevenson. “It goes hand in hand.”
“We’ve come back year after year and we see many outstanding candidates for different jobs within our company,” Emmerson said. “I think within our local community and within the province.”
Sask. Polytech says the career fair has been attracting students for at least 20 years.
