Sask. meat processor fined $40K after worker shot while handling gun

A Saskatchewan meat processing business has been fined $40,000 in connection to an incident in 2023, according to the province.

The incident in question occurred on Dec. 28, 2023, near Gruenthal, Sask. when a worker was seriously injured while handling a rifle that discharged.

Valley Meat Processors Inc. pleaded guilty to a violation of provincial health and safety regulations on March 11 in Rosthern Provincial Court.

Specifically, Valley Meat was charged with failing to provide the necessary training or supervision for its workers — ultimately leading to an injury.

The court imposed a fine of $28,571.43 along with a victim surcharge of $11,428.57 for a total fine of $40,000. One other charge was withdrawn.
