Prince Albert family devasted after pet dog shot

WATCH: A Prince Albert family says they were devastated after their pet dog was shot in a yard earlier this week.

Prince Albert resident George Shand experienced a pet owner’s worst nightmare one afternoon when he received a shocking call from his wife.

“My wife was in the kitchen and heard the gunshot,” said Shand. “Immediately she thought of the only dog of the two that was in the backyard and ran out to hear Misha screaming.”

On Tuesday, March 25, around 2 p.m., their family dog Misha was shot while out in the yard.

“Thankfully, I only worked just a couple of minutes away,” said Shand. “I was able to have Misha at the vet inside about 15 minutes.”

Shand says the incident has made the family feel unsafe in the home where they’ve lived for 20 years.

“Especially when there’s little kids and our grandkids, all at play, it brings the question, do we stay there?”

Family friends opened a GoFundMe to pay for Misha’s veterinary bills — which, as of Friday afternoon, has nearly reached its goal of $4,500.

“We were overwhelmed with the level of caring and concern from the community,” Shand said. “Like I say, we could never say thank you enough.”

The Prince Albert Police Service said in a media release that it is asking anyone with information to contact police.

“Other than having the neighbors’ video footage, and a little bit ourselves of him running away, we really know nothing,” said Shand.

“We don’t have a motivation for what happened.”

Shand described Misha, a seven-year-old malamute and great Pyrenees mix, as a sturdy dog who is currently on the mend.

Following to veterinary advice, the bullet has not been removed to avoid causing further muscle damage.
