An oil spill along Swan Creek in Saanich has been traced back to a home.

Saanich officials say the spill was reported Friday morning prompting crews to place containment booms in several spots to mop up the mess.

People in the area said they could smell fuel around Columbine Way and Carey Road and the oily sheen was visible in the water.

The spill was traced back to an above ground oil tank that was leaking on O’Connell Place.

The district is working with the homeowner’s insurance company to cover the clean-up expenses.

It’s unknown how much oil spilled into the region’s waterways.

The home’s oil tank was last filled in September.
