A 29-year-old Saanich man is facing a number of charges after he allegedly stole a vehicle, crashed it and then fled the scene.

Comox Valley RCMP says officers located a stolen vehicle in the 300-block of Lerwick Road in Courtenay on April 20.

When officers approached the vehicle, it sped off in a dangerous manner, officials say.

“Having a vehicle flee from us at high rates of speed is extremely dangerous, it is lucky no one was injured during this incident,” said Const. Rob Gardner. “The moral of this story would be don’t run from the police, you will be caught.”

Police tracked down the vehicle a short distance away after it crashed into a tree. The driver took off, but a wallet with ID and a loaded firearm were found in the vehicle.

Joshua Flagg was arrested nearby and made his first court appearance on Tuesday. He faces 11 charges, including obstructing a police officer, possession of a firearm and possession of stolen property.
