Saskatchewan science, math and reading scores below national average and past scores

A recent country-wide assessment shows Saskatchewan is struggling in major subjects. Mick Favel has the details.

Saskatchewan Grade 8 students performed under the national average in three major subjects, according to a new report.

According to the 2023 Pan-Canadian Assessment Program (PCAP), Saskatchewan students scored lower than the national average on the subjects of science, math, and reading.

In the sciences, Saskatchewan scored 477 points, compared to the national average of 501. Alberta led the country with 513 points.

For math, Saskatchewan ranked near the bottom with 482 points with only New Brunswick in addition to Newfoundland and Labrador scoring less. Quebec held the highest score with 522 points.

Saskatchewan ranked sixth among the provinces assessed in terms of reading with 486 points. Ontario ranked the highest with 514 points.

Saskatchewan has fallen in all three categories when compared to its 2013 assessment. Ten years ago, the province scored 486 points in science, nine more points than it recorded in 2023.

The Government of Saskatchewan has said it remains committed to improving student achievement and giving students their best opportunities by, “establishing healthy, positive learning environments and equipping them with an education that is recognized globally.”

Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Education is developing a new provincial assessment program aimed at helping students be prepared for success with the proper skills and knowledge. The program will include a focus on improvements in reading, writing, and math.

PCAP was created to inform Canadians of the effectiveness of provincial education systems.

PCAP releases a report every three years, with roughly 30,000 randomly selected students from across Canada taking part.

The next assessment is scheduled for 2027.
